Cleveland.com story OHIO-All Media Artist
FEATURED ON CLEVELAND.COM
Broadview Heights resident June Hund has been creating art for most of her life. Only recently, however, has she put her work on display for others.
That decision, it seems, has served her well.
Hund won “Best in Show” at the Ohio All-Media Juried Exhibition at Ashland Univeristy’s Coburn Gallery. The opening reception was June 26 and the artists’ works will continue to be displayed until July 29.
Her collage, “Sail the Darkened Seas,” is a mixed media piece that demonstrates the depths of the soul in which artists create. She had been crafting the work for over a year.
“I like to get dimension,” Hund said. “I do a lot of building up of the material and scraping down.” The collage, which encompasses a variety of media on wood, serves as a sort of historical portal for Hund. Some of the pieces in it came from other works of art in her past. It’s a recycling habit that comes up often in Hund’s art. Her own watercolors and drawings often become the basis of future projects, as they get reworked into abstract collages, she explained.
Much like the grand machinations of life itself, Hund’s work focuses on assemblage and manipulation. With little sparks of inspiration, the trajectory of any particular piece can shift dramatically. The intervention of destiny is as palpable in “Sail the Darkened Seas” as it is in any person’s life story.
“My artwork is a reaction to a situation or event. Unconsciously, I think about the composition and the visual elements of art when I work on a piece. I control the surface by adding or removing layers. Each piece is a creative journey,” Hund said.
With her work catching attention from various art shows now, her own creative journey may hold a fascinating future.
“It was an interesting surprise,” Hund said of her recent accolade. “It’s fantastic to have the honor to share my art with my peers.”
