The Coburn Gallery at Ashland University has scheduled the opening of a national juried exhibition titled “Ode to Degas,” which will run from May 18 to June 17, 2018, in the Coburn Gallery. The exhibition is family friendly and admission to the reception is free and open to the public.
This exhibition is a collection of works that embody the concepts of movement explored by Edgar Degas, most specifically in his dancers. The exhibition features 20 artworks from artists across the United States selected by juror Robert Robbins. Robbins received his MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Yale University and his BFA in Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design. Robbins is the chair of the Art Department at Miami University of Ohio.
Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery, said “I am very excited about this exhibition not only because it showcases the talents of visual artists from across the country but it also celebrates the fine arts, more specifically dance in the Ashland area. We are very lucky to have many different dance opportunities for children in our community. Ode to Degas should inspire young visual artists and dancers alike.”
Exhibiting artists include: Zach Koch, Mississippi; Jan O’Dea, Ohio; Rod Bradfield, Indiana; Betsy Oberhausen, Ohio; Denise Cerniglia, North Carolina; Michael Alexa Velez, Florida; Joyce Morrow Jones, Ohio; Rhonda Urdang, Arizona; Jennifer Sowders, Ohio; Robert Ryan, California; Susan Shafer, Ohio; Connie Pastor, Ohio; Charles Mintz, Ohio; Marty Bossler Lee, Ohio; Tina Henderson, Indiana; and Nancy Dupre, Ohio.
The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, May 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to coincide with the 36th Annual Spring Dance Concert presented by Opus II Dance Studio, with Ashland Regional Ballet in the Hugo Young Theatre.
The following awards were selected by the juror Robert Robbins: Best in Show to Zach Koch for his oil painting titled “This Could Be Us but You Playin’” and three Honorable Mention awards went to Jan O’Dea for her oil painting titled “The Continental Theater Fire, September 14, 1861”; Zach Koch for his oil painting titled “I’m a Loner, A Rebel”; and Betsy Oberhausen for her photograph titled “In the Moment.”
