2023 Senior Art & Design Award Announced




The 2023 Senior Art & Design Exhibition award were presented by Dan McDonald chair of the Ashland University Art and Design department, on Tuesday April 4 at the Coburn Art Gallery opening reception.
 
Mariel Leatherman was selected as the recipient for the 2023 Senior Exhibition Award. The award was established in 2001 and is given annually to the graduating senior(s) whose accomplishments in art and design are judged by the faculty of the Department of Art and Design to be the most worthy of recognition for the presentation of their senior exhibition.  


Leatherman, from Westfield Center, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education and a sculpture concentration. Leatherman is the oldest daughter of John and Theresa Leatherman. She is a graduate of Cloverleaf High School. Leatherman has exhibited at the Juried Student Art Exhibition and was awarded the “Dean’s Award” and “Juror Special Mention”. Leatherman has also exhibited multiple artworks at the Annual May Show of the Mansfield Art Center. During her time at Ashland Leatherman has had the opportunity to intern with the Coburn Art Gallery, the Well, the Massillon Art Museum, and Five Stones Community Church. Upon Graduation, Leatherman plans to secure a teaching job in the North East Ohio area. 

The Senior Art & Design Exhibition runs from April 4-May 6, 2023.

Senior & Art Design Exhibition Opens April 4th

 

Each spring, the Ashland University Coburn Gallery hosts the Senior Art and Design Exhibition that features the capstone experience for graduating art and design majors.

 Bringing together artwork made by graduating seniors in the Department of Art and Design, the 2023 Senior Art and Design Exhibition will open on Tuesday, April 4, with an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Coburn Art Gallery located in the Center for the Arts on the Ashland University campus. The senior art awards will be announced at 5:30p.m. at the April 4 reception.

“While the 2023 Senior Art Exhibition provides the capstone experience for graduating art and design majors, it represents more than just students’ studio art experiences,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “For these students of the liberal arts, the exhibition is the culmination of their undergraduate careers at Ashland University.”
 
This year’s exhibitions, which will run from April 4 through May 6, include graphic design, illustration, digital art, fibers, painting, and ceramics. The gallery will be closed during the university Easter break April 6-10, 2023.
 
Senior Art Exhibition artists - Sarah Shearer, Valerie Painter, Mariel Leatherman and  Abigail Marchand .
Shearer, from Norton, OH, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Art (Graphic Design concentration) and a Bachelor of Science and Business Administration in Marketing. Shearer is the youngest daughter of James and Kelly Shearer of Norton. She is a graduate of Norton High School. Shearer has exhibited in the Juried Student Art Exhibition and was awarded the “Saville Award” for her photograph titled “Construction Zone.” During her time at Ashland, Shearer had the opportunity to build experience from three internships on and off campus. Currently, Shearer is working as a Graphic Design intern at Bendon, Inc. located in Ashland, OH where she assists in designing coloring books, games, and puzzles. Shearer plans to secure a graphic design position in the Ashland area.

Valerie Painter, from Broadview Heights, Ohio, is a graduate from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School and will graduate from Ashland University with a Bachelors of Arts in Fine Art (painting concentration) and a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. While attending Ashland, she was awarded Ashland University’s Permanent Art Collection Award in AU’s 2022 Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition as well as conducted a SONA affiliated psychology research project. In the summer of 2022, she completed an internship with Girl Scouts of Western Ohio as an arts and crafts specialist for their residential summer camp program. Upon graduation, Valerie plans to continue her education by receiving a Master’s in Psychology in order to pursue her goals of becoming an art therapist. 

Abigail, from Massillon, Ohio and will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts for Business Administration and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design. Abigail is the only daughter of Christopher and Candy Marchand and she has an older brother. She graduated from Perry high school in Massillon, OH. While here at Ashland University she participated in choir, Marching Band (Color Guard), and tried to help the community when she could. Upon graduation she hopes to secure a job in the field of graphic design.

Art + Design Awards Announced

The award winners have been announced for the Ashland University 2023 Juried Student Art and Design Exhibition that will run through March 24 in the University’s Coburn Art Gallery.

 This exhibition offers over $1000.00 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, Saville Award, People’s Choice Award and the AU Permanent Art Collection Award. The awards were announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on March 2, 2023. 

Gallery patrons will have the opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite artwork while visiting the exhibition. Voting runs through 4:00pm on March 19, 2023. The People’s Choice award will be announced on the Coburn Gallery’s Facebook page on March 20, 2023. 

The exhibition features 82 works selected by the outside juror Emily Bartolone. Bartolone obtained her BFA from the University of Dayton and her MFA from Kent State University. She is currently working and living in northeastern Ohio where she is the Curator of the Malone Art Gallery at Malone University, Canton, OH. Her work has been seen in publications such as Art Hole Magazine, London, ENG, and Okay Cool Magazine, New York, NY. Within her career, she has shown at Project Gallery V, New York City, NY, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH, The Contemporary, Dayton, OH, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh, PA, the Oceanside Museum of Art, San Diego, CA, and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, St. Louis, MO, among others.

Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition Opens March 2nd

 Ashland University’s annual Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition opens on Thursday, March 2, with a reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m., at the Coburn Gallery, located in the Center for the Arts (331 College Ave.). Gallery admission is free and open to the public.

This exhibition, which runs from March 2-24, represents a culmination of student work from university art classes during the academic year. It is an opportunity for art students to take their best artwork from the year, learn how to professionally present it for display and then receive feedback from an outside art professional.


More than $1,000 in awards will be distributed to student artists, including for Best in Show, Honorable Mentions, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, Wink Alumni Award, Saville Award, AU Permanent Collection Award and the People’s Choice Award. The awards will be announced during the opening reception, with the exception of the People’s Choice Award that will be posted on the Coburn Gallery’s Facebook page on March 24.

Generous donations from Wendy and Scott Schaller, Michael Bird and Kaylin Henry, the AU Permanent Art Collection and other private donors have allowed AU to offer these awards.

The outside juror for the exhibition is Emily Bartolone, a contemporary painter from Canton, Ohio. She is the curator of the Malone Art Gallery at Malone University, and her work has been seen in such publications as Art Hole and Okay Cool magazines. Her art has been featured at a number of exhibitions throughout the country, including Project Gallery V in New York City, the Oceanside Museum of Art in San Diego, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild among others. Bartolone obtained a bachelor’s in fine arts from the University of Dayton, as well as a master’s in fine arts from Kent State University.

“The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to support the arts by purchasing a student artwork, whether you are just starting to collect art or adding to a collection,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery.

AU Art + Design Faculty Exhibition opens January 19, 2023

 

The Coburn Gallery announces its upcoming art exhibition featuring works from the Ashland University Art + Design Department Faculty. This annual exhibition highlights the two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of the current faculty as professional artists exhibiting in their prospective areas. The Art + Design department faculty pursue active studio careers in addition to their teaching endeavors. 

The Art + Design Department Faculty Exhibition opens on Thursday January 19 with a reception from 4:30-6:30pm and the event is free and open to the public.


The exhibition features the following Art + Design department faculty: Keith Dull, Sarah Esposito, Priscilla Roggenkamp, Dan McDonald, Cynthia Petry, Emily Bartolone and Michael Bird. The exhibition runs through February 19, 2023.
