“Picturing the Past: Highlights from the Ashland University Permanent Collection”-Opens January 24, 2019

Ashland University’s Coburn Gallery will host an exhibition titled “Picturing the Past:  Highlights from the Ashland University Permanent Collection,” it will feature a selection of artworks from the Myers Collection curated by AU Associate Professor Dr. Wendy Schaller.

The seventeen historical paintings featured in the exhibition “Picturing the Past:  Highlights from the Ashland University Permanent Collection,” span a period of 500 years of art historical development representing the styles of a number of important schools and geographic locations both European and American.  The works selected demonstrate the broad scope of Ashland University’s collection and include Christian subjects, historical scenes, genre scenes, landscapes, portraits, and animal paintings.  While four of the works on display were previously exhibited together at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in 1941 (“Loan Exhibition of Paintings Selected from the John C. Myers Collection”), this particular selection of paintings has never before been exhibited together.  The university’s collection has significant educational value and this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to share these fascinating paintings with the broader university population and Ashland community.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held Thursday, January 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Coburn Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public and the exhibition runs through February 23, 2019. For more information about the exhibition contact the Coburn Gallery at 419.289.5652 or www.ashland.edu/coburngallery.
