The Coburn Gallery at Ashland University will host a two-person exhibition titled The Wedge Between Us, paintings by Emily Bartolone and Sarah Esposito. The exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday, September 29, from 4:30-6:30pm. The reception is free and open to the public.
Emily Bartolone obtained her BFA from the University of Dayton and her MFA from Kent State University. She is currently working and living in northeastern Ohio where she is the Curator of the Malone Art Gallery at Malone University, Canton, OH. Her work has been seen in publications such as Art Hole Magazine, London, ENG, and Okay Cool Magazine, New York, NY. Within her career, she has shown at Project Gallery V, New York City, NY, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH, The Contemporary, Dayton, OH, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh, PA, the Oceanside Museum of Art, San Diego, CA, and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, St. Louis, MO, among others.
Bartolone’s work stems from her infatuation with the formal elements of painting, her work pairs down simple, anthropomorphized shapes in an effort to explore the formal elements of painting and color theory while simultaneously creating tension and humor through color, edges, and texture. In utilizing color theory to create color relationships that result in sensory optical experiences upon viewing, she can trick the viewer into seeing colors as other than themselves, adding a layer of humor to the production of the works. Further informed by ideas of the mundane, the awkward, and the jovial that surround everyday life, the complexity of human relationships are mimicked by the shapes interacting on each painting’s surface. These ideas are used to take viewers outside of themselves for a short period of time, hoping to offer a break from the bombardment of distractions, notifications, and news we encounter so often on a daily basis.
The work of painter Sarah Esposito abstracts systematic occurrences and interruptions found in landscape through her personal relationship with the natural world. Esposito’s paintings include relationships between color, shape, and surface, abstracting the contrast of harmony and tension in landscape. This coexists with both the formal language of painting and different attributes of the natural world. Esposito’s paintings call upon her experience of being in an outdoor space, looking, journaling, and gathering information from different vantage points. Esposito translates her image gathering into collaged paintings that create framing devices for fleeting moments in landscape. Esposito earned her Bachelors of Arts from Fairmont State University in 2020 and her Masters of Fine Arts at Kent State University in 2022.
The Wedge Between Us painting exhibition will run from September 29 through October 22.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and is free and open to the public. For more information about the reception or exhibition, call 419.289.5652 or visit us on Facebook.
