The Ashland University Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition opens Thursday, March 4, in the Coburn Gallery. This exhibition will offer $950 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Honorable Mentions, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, Wink Alumni award, AU Permanent Collection Award and the People’s Choice Award. The art awards will be announced on the Coburn’s Facebook page at 5:30 p.m. on March 4.
The annual exhibition represents a culmination of student work from university art classes during the school year. It is an opportunity for art students to take their best artwork from the year, learn how to professionally present it for display, and then receive feedback from an outside art professional.
The outside juror for exhibition is Noah Schenk. Noah received his BFA from Kent State University with a focus in Glass. While earning his MFA from Ball State University, Schenk began exploring more conceptual artwork, expanding his visual vocabulary from mostly object making to creating installations questioning, observing and processing our current society. Schenk is currently the glass chair and instructor at Mansfield Art Center.
The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to support the arts by purchasing a student artwork, whether just starting to collect art or adding to a collection. The exhibition runs through March 30. A generous donation from Dr. Wendy and Scott Schaller, Dr. Dawn Weber, the AU Permanent Art Collection and other private donors has allowed the University to offer several of these awards.
The Coburn Gallery is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and weekends from noon-4 p.m. Gallery admission is free and open to the public. New COVID-19 safety protocols include a maximum of 15 visitors who may visit the gallery at one time, groups no larger than five, and face masks must be worn at all the times on the Ashland University campus including on the exterior of the buildings.
