Upcoming Opening Reception-Oct 27th

The Coburn Art Gallery at Ashland University will be hosting a printmaking exhibition featuring works by Ashland University alumni printmakers as well as artists from the Bluegrass Printmakers’ Co-op of Lexington, Ky.

The exhibition will open on Thursday, Oct. 27 and run through Dec. 9. The gallery will have a reception on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Ashland University Alumni Print Exhibition will highlight some of the finer moments in Ashland University printmaking from 1999 to 2011. The work was done under the instruction of Associate Professor of Art Keith Dull, and other than two current seniors, the artists represented are graduates of the AU Art Department. These Ashland alumni include many students who have gone on to graduate studies, and one who received an MFA in printmaking. Several of these artists are currently employed as educators in north central Ohio.

The members who will be exhibiting are Dustin Kruty, Carl Raponi, Malenka Kaydan, Ashley Mont, Jenny Snyder, Lydia McClay, Adam Zbdynowsky, Melissa Holton, Laura Arthur-Osborne, Josh Risner, Andrew Ditlevson, Matt Kidney, Esther Foulk, Claire Kerekey, Anna Kiehn and Emily Fitch.

The Bluegrass Printmakers’ Cooperative (BPC) is a thriving print studio in the Lexington area where printmakers work and create a dialogue about prints and art. Following a donation of an antique press to LexArts, the local arts organization the BPC opened in 2004, the group has grown to 20 artists working in all types of print media: collagraphs, monoprints, etchings, woodcuts, linoleum cuts and solar etchings. Not only do members use the press to create their own art, but they work as a group to promote printmaking through exhibitions and community outreach. Exhibiting members at the Coburn Gallery will be Marta Dorton, Elizabeth Foley, Natalia Ilieva, Jamie Karolich, Derrick Riley, Jean Settle and Lauren Wilder.

The Coburn Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday /Sunday. The gallery is closed during university breaks. For more information about the exhibition call 419.289.5652 or visit us on Facebook.

A traveling exhibition of 30 photographs entitled Life on the Border: The Karen People of Burma. The photographs themselves are silver gelatin prints made on 16"x20" fiber-based paper, with an actual image size of 12"x18"

The town of Mae Sot, Thailand lays along the eastern bank of the Moei River, an eight-hour overnight bus journey from Bangkok. Across the Moei from Mae Sot is the military controlled country of Burma, and the "Friendship Bridge" which spans the river at Mae Sot makes the town an important point for anyone wishing to cross between the two countries. But there is more to this remote border town then first meets the eye. Besides the shops that line the streets and back alleys of Mae Sot, there is also a large, clandestine world: that of the Karen People.
Since 1948, the Karen, whose state lies just within Burma across the Moei River from Mae Sot, have been fighting a civil was against the Burmese military junta for independence for their areas. But this continuous warfare has come at a very high price for the Karen People: an uncountable number of dead and wounded, the destruction of countless Karen villages as the Burmese junta tries to put down the Karen, and hundreds of thousands of Karen refugees streaming across the Moei River into Thailand to escape the fighting. When they arrive in Thailand, the refugees have two choices – 1.) they are either forced to live legally in the squalor of various overcrowded United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) camps, or 2.) they can risk staying illegally, with a constant battle both to hide from the Thai authorities who will deport them if caught, and, at the same time, avoid the numerous unscrupulous employers who attempt to exploit them because of their status as unregistered aliens.
From mid-February to mid-March of 2006 I photographed in and around the town of Mae Sot in order to document the lives of the Karen people who are living in Thailand. I originally traveled to the Mae Sot area in order to photograph the Mae Tao Clinic, which is run by Dr. Cynthia Maung, a Burmese refugee and Nobel Prize Nominee, who runs the clinic in order to care for her fellow countrymen who have fled Burma. She had invited me to visit subsequent to my contact with her after reading a post on the internet about the clinic, and what was transpiring there. So in order to see the situation first hand, I self-financed the expense of the project, and traveled to photograph the clinic. But upon my arrival, and along with help from my guide and translator, Maung Maung Tinn, I expanded my project to photograph not only the clinic operations, but also the lives of the Karen in and around Mae Sot.
Maung Maung Tinn took it upon himself to show me areas of Mae Sot where the Karen live and work, and where few Westerns travel when in the area. With his help, I also made an extensive network of contact along the Thai/Burma border. These contacts enabled me to gain access to still more places where the Karen are trying to put their lives together again.
The photographs in this body of work are the result of the Karen People granting me the rare privilege of access to their personal lives. Without their trust allowing me into their world, this project would not have been possible. In the hopes that my photographs may help their situation on the border, I have also allowed the Mae Tao Clinic, and various other people involved with the Karen, permission to use my photographs to raise awareness of the Karen and the problems they face on a daily basis. And I have also maintained contact with many of the people that befriended me along the border with the hope of one day being able to return and continue to photograph the lives of the forgotten Karen.

Cleveland.com story OHIO-All Media Artist

FEATURED ON CLEVELAND.COM

Broadview Heights resident June Hund has been creating art for most of her life. Only recently, however, has she put her work on display for others.

That decision, it seems, has served her well.

Hund won “Best in Show” at the Ohio All-Media Juried Exhibition at Ashland Univeristy’s Coburn Gallery. The opening reception was June 26 and the artists’ works will continue to be displayed until July 29.

Her collage, “Sail the Darkened Seas,” is a mixed media piece that demonstrates the depths of the soul in which artists create. She had been crafting the work for over a year.

“I like to get dimension,” Hund said. “I do a lot of building up of the material and scraping down.” The collage, which encompasses a variety of media on wood, serves as a sort of historical portal for Hund. Some of the pieces in it came from other works of art in her past. It’s a recycling habit that comes up often in Hund’s art. Her own watercolors and drawings often become the basis of future projects, as they get reworked into abstract collages, she explained.

Much like the grand machinations of life itself, Hund’s work focuses on assemblage and manipulation. With little sparks of inspiration, the trajectory of any particular piece can shift dramatically. The intervention of destiny is as palpable in “Sail the Darkened Seas” as it is in any person’s life story.

“My artwork is a reaction to a situation or event. Unconsciously, I think about the composition and the visual elements of art when I work on a piece. I control the surface by adding or removing layers. Each piece is a creative journey,” Hund said.

With her work catching attention from various art shows now, her own creative journey may hold a fascinating future.

“It was an interesting surprise,” Hund said of her recent accolade. “It’s fantastic to have the honor to share my art with my peers.”

OHIO-All Media Juried Exhibition Awards

The Coburn Gallery would like announce the awards for the 2011 Ohio All Media Juried Exhibition.
This exhibition was created as a showcase for Ohio artists working in any media, traditional or experimental. The 10th annual exhibition includes 47 artworks from 38 local and regional Ohio artists.
June Hund’s mixed media collage entitled “Sail the Darken Seas” received Best of Show.
June Hund, mixed-media artist, has been involved in the creative process and producing artwork since early childhood. She grew up in a household passionate about music, fine arts, and travel. She traveled throughout Europe as a young adult, spending time in Florence studying the great masters of Italian art. She received a bachelor’s of fine art in painting from Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan). She has worked in many different mediums and techniques. In Detroit she preferred watercolor and oil; but during this time she started working with collage/assemblage.

When she relocating to the Cleveland, Ohio area, she started down a different life path but was still active with the creative process. She became more interested in working with mixed media, assemblage, and collage. She often reuses her own watercolors and drawings, reworking them into abstract collages. The composition, texture, and process are essential. She carefully adds layers and then sands the layers to add depth to each piece. June recently started showing her artwork in the Cleveland area.

The following artists received merit awards: Keith Wilde’s painting entitled “Rendering the Son”, George T. Gregory Jr’s sculpture entitled “Tennis Anyone” and Jonny Luv’s photograph “Beautiful ”.

There were three juror mention awards: Rebecca Kaler “Aerial “a oil painting, Diane F. Ramo’s collage entitled “ Contamination” and Paul D. Wilbur’s digital photograph entitled “Built Farm Tough”.

The Coburn Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 10am-5pm and 12noon-4pm on Saturday/ Sunday. The Ohio- All Media exhibition closes on Friday July 29, 2011. For more about the 2011 Ohio All Media Juried Art Exhibition at Coburn Gallery, visit www.ashland.edu/coburngallery or find us on FaceBook.
