2014 Juried Student Art Exhibition

          The Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition opens on Thursday, March13, in the Coburn Gallery with a reception to be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

          This exhibition will offer $1,300 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Everett S. Caldemeyer Award, Dean’s Award , People’s Choice Award and awards in each of the six art areas: painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital media, drawing and ceramics. The awards ceremony will begin at 5 p.m.

          The annual exhibition represents a culmination of student work from university art classes during the school year. It is an opportunity for art students to take their best artwork from the year, learn how to professionally present it for display, and then receive feedback from an outside art professional.

          The outside juror for exhibition is Julie M. Elman is an associate professor in the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University in Athens, where she teaches courses in publication design. She has an MFA in photography from Ohio University and a BFA in commercial art from the University of Dayton (in Ohio). She worked within the newspaper industry for 15 years, as a designer, photojournalist and picture editor. She is co-author of The Newspaper Designer's Handbook, 7th edition, with Tim Harrower (McGraw-Hill, 2012). Elman designed the New York Times best-selling photography book The Rise of Barack Obama (Triumph Books, 2008) for Pete Souza, who is the chief White House photographer. She also designed the book Stories from the Anne Grimes Collection of American Folk Music (Ohio University Press, 2010).The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to support the arts by purchasing a student artwork, whether you are just starting to collect art or adding to a collection.

        The exhibition runs from March 13-28, 2014. A generous donation from Charles Caldemeyer, Dr. Dawn Weber and other private donors has allowed the University to offer several of these awards.

Call for Entries- National Juried Exhibition -TIME WILL TELL

The Coburn Gallery announces a national juried exhibition entitled Time will Tell- a Show of Artistic Wisdom and Experience which will feature artists at least 50 years of age residing in the United States. This exhibition will culminate in a collection of works that embody the creativity and innovation of artists ages 50 years and older at all levels of artistic endeavor.  The exhibit runs from May 16 through June 22, 2014. Jurors  Al Aitken and Rebecca Kaler.          Al Aitken received his Masters of Fine Arts in printmaking and photography at Ohio University. Aitken has been a professor of photography at Case Western since 2001. His artworks are in the collections of Cleveland Museum of Art and Modern Museum of Art in New York. In 2013, Aitken has exhibited in FAVA in Oberlin, Ohio and Mesa Museum of Contemporary Art Mesa, Arizona. Rebecca Kaler is an artist who has shown extensively nationally and internationally in such places as the Butler Museum of American Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Cleveland Institute of Art Reinberger Gallery, and the Kiosko Gallery in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She has authored and illustrated a children’s book, “Blueberry Bear,” published by Inquiring Voices Press, and has an extensive background in design, painting, textiles, and ceramics. Kaler was the Curatorial Director of the Pearl Conard Art Gallery at The Ohio State University in Mansfield, OH, for twenty years, and she is currently retired in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Works in any media accepted. All work must be original art conceived and executed solely by the artist within the last two years.  . $800.00 in AWARDS. A maximum of two digital entries for $20.00 are allowed per artist. Entries must be original works in any media (2-D or 3-D), completed within the last two years.
