"Interrupted " Exhibition Opens Thursday September 1st

Ashland University’s Coburn Gallery will host an exhibition titledInterrupted,” which will feature a selection of works that address the theme of loss and longing within people’s lives.
An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through Sept. 25, 2016.
The exhibition includes 35 artworks from 26 artists from across the United States. They include: Aileen Bassis, Andrew J Brown, Diana Budde, Molly Jo Burke, Anne Chesnut, Sage Dawson, Adrienne Der Marderosian, Eugene Ellenberg, Roya Farassat, Marcella Hackbardt, Megan Hildebrandt, Chakila L. Hoskins, Honey Lazar, Emily McIIroy, Charles Mintz, Robert Mullenix, Danielle Muzina, Carlos Rene Pacheco, Melissa Redman, Sarah G Sharp, Rachel Suzanne Smith, Sally Schluter Tardella, Kim Rae Taylor, Julie Wills, Lauren Voss and Jim Zimpel.

The theme for the exhibition was inspired by a story featured on NPR that discussed the validity of “unfinished works” by visual artists and the artworks relationship to the whole of their lives and careers.
According to Coburn Gallery Director Cynthia Petry, the response to the ‘Interrupted’ exhibition theme has been overwhelming with more than 100 artists nationwide submitting works for the call for entry. A total of 26 were selected for the exhibition by Petry.
“For many of the artists, the theme evoked emotions that reflected our need as humans to see each point within our lives embedded with meaning, even if these points may be left unfinished or lost,” Petry said.
The Coburn Gallery also has the honor of debuting a video installation work as part of the “Interrupted” art exhibition. This video work by Cleveland artists Honey Lazar and Lauren Voss is titled “The Year My Sisters Died.”
“This video is a visual poem about my grief as well as those times when life flattens us. Seasons changed, trees shed, rested, and predictably bloomed. Rain and snow fell. Mourning held a monotonous metronomic rhythm. Eventually, I accepted that my sisters were gone; that my sorrow would not end, but it was time to get up and leave the room,” Lazar said.
