2019 Senior Art + Design Exhibitions-

Each spring, the Ashland University Coburn Gallery hosts the Senior Art and Design Exhibition that features the capstone experience for graduating art majors.

Bringing together artwork made by graduating seniors in the Department of Art and Design , the 2019 Senior Art and Design Exhibitions will open on Thursday, April 4 and Tuesday, April 23, with an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on each perspective date at the Coburn Art Gallery located in the Center for the Arts on the Ashland University campus. The senior art awards will be announced at 5 p.m. at the April 23 reception.

“While the 2019 Senior Art Exhibition provides the capstone experience for graduating art and design majors, it represents more than just students’ studio art experiences,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “For these students of the liberal arts, the exhibition is the culmination of their undergraduate careers at Ashland University.”

This year’s exhibitions, which will run from April 4 through May 4, include graphic design, illustration, digital art, painting, and ceramics.

Senior Art Exhibition I artists - Ashley Chenevey, Megan Helfrich, Oromia Jula, and Raven Roddy.

Senior Art Exhibition II artists - Cait Davis, Sage Haines, Allison Montgomery, Michaela Ping, Madeline Rogowski, and Kiana Ziegler.

Chenevey, daughter of Ken and Val Chenevey from Wooster, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in Ceramics and a minor in Business Administration. She is a 2015 graduate of Waynedale High School in Apple Creek, Ohio. During her years at Ashland University, she has exhibited work in the Juried Student Art Exhibition several times. She has also been awarded the Dean’s Award throughout her years at Ashland. Upon graduation, she plans on continuing to pursue her career in operating a bakery in Orrville, Ohio.

Helfrich, daughter of Lona and Richard Helfrich, from Howard, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor in Art Education. She is a graduate from East Knox High School and plans to stay within the mid-Ohio area where she hopes to teach art and create a creative outlet for students while showing them critical ways of thinking. She has also attended the National Art Education Association in Seattle during the year of 2018 to further her art educator experience. While attending Ashland University, she has learned a lot and been greatly challenged and is excited to start her teaching career.

Jula, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Art and Graphic Programming with a minor in Computer Science and Religion. Jula is the oldest of Birhanu Jula and Aregash Bera. She grew up in the capital, Addis Ababa and got the opportunity to begin her college career in Ashland, Ohio. Jula has exhibited her works at the Juried Student Art Exhibition several times in different mediums and has received “Best Digital Art” award. She is a very active member of her community and has served as Cultural Coordinator for the International Club and is currently working as an intern at the International Student Services. Upon graduation, Jula intends to attend Syracuse University to receive a Master’s in Computer Art.

Roddy of Mt. Liberty, Ohio will graduate from Ashland University with a Bachelor of Fine Art, concentrating in painting. He graduated from Centerburg High School in 2015. While attending Ashland, he has been a member of Art Club, showcased artwork in the Juried Student Art Exhibition receiving the Painting Award in 2018 and has participated in the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium twice. He had the honor of being the Outstanding Junior of the year for the Department of Art in 2018.

Davis, daughter of Rex and Lisa Davis, will graduate with a Bachelor of Art in Commercial Art, with a concentration in Graphic Design. She is a graduate of Buckeye Trail High School in Lore City, Ohio. Davis had shown work in the 2017 Juried Student Art Exhibition. Davis is an active member of Theta Phi Alpha sorority and was elected apparel chair for two consecutive terms in 2017-2018. During her junior year, Davis was the Graphic Design Assistant for the Athletic Marketing Department for Ashland University, where she designed stationary, murals, and conference marketing material. In her senior year, Davis served as the Graphic Design Intern for Theta Phi Alpha’s National Office in Bay Village, Ohio, where she designed newsletters, social media posts, and holiday cards. As a freelance designer, Davis has designed multiple logos, social media marketing packages, apparel, and websites. Upon graduation, Davis plans to attend graduate school for Higher Education.

Haines, daughter of Sue Amos and Shaun Haines, will graduate with a Bachelor of Art in Digital Media Production as well as Commercial Art, with a concentration in Graphic Design. She is a graduate of Big Walnut High School in Sunbury, Ohio. She has been recognized as Ashland University’s Intern of the Month for the Fall 2018 semester and was selected as Outstanding Sophomore of the year for the Department of Art. In the 2018-19 school year, she has served as President of Art Club as well as Program Director for Ashland University’s student-run television station, AUTV-20. Haines has been exhibited in the Juried Student Art Exhibition several times and was awarded the Digital Art and Photography award in 2018. Haines has served as Ashland-based company Novatex’s graphic design intern for one year and will likely continue professional employment with the company upon graduation.

Montgomery, from Centerburg, OH, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Art and concentration in Graphic Design with a minor in Marketing. Montgomery is the eldest daughter of Brian and Cindy Montgomery. She is a graduate of Centerburg High School. During her time at Ashland, Montgomery had the opportunity to work for the Ashland University Art Department by assisting in the design lab. Her freshman year, Montgomery was invited to join the Alpha Lambda Delta honorary society. Montgomery exhibited in the Juried Student Art Exhibition her junior year and was awarded the Dean’s Award. During her senior year, Montgomery served as the Coburn Art Gallery graphic design intern by creating various items to be used by the gallery as promotional items.

Ping, from Batavia, Illinois, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and Digital Media Production. Ping is the second daughter of Mary Ann and Michael Ping.
At Ashland, Ping played on the volleyball team for all four years and was named captain her senior year. She was also recognized with a team leadership award following her final season. She also became a social media intern for the Marketing Department during the latter half of her junior year, and her internship will continue until her graduation. She has been awarded the Dean’s Award and has been recognized multiple times by the GLIAC for her academic achievements. After graduation, she intends to move to either Columbus, Ohio, or Nashville, Tennessee to become a graphic designer or video editor. She has also expressed interest in interior design and may pursue that route later on down the road.

Rogowski, from Streetsboro, OH, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Art and concentration in Graphic Design as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. Rogowski is the eldest daughter of Edward and Jennifer Rogowski of Streetsboro. She is a graduate of Streetsboro High School in 2015. Rogowski has been exhibited in the Juried Student Art Exhibition numerous times and was awarded the “Best in Show” in the Design category in 2017. Rogowski is an active member of Delta Zeta sorority and served as apparel chair during the 2017 year, and as marketing chair during the 2018 year, contributing multiple forms of work. During her junior year, Rogowski served as the Branding and Graphics intern at Emerson: Therm-O-Disc located in Mansfield, OH where she primarily assisted in catalog design, as well as various forms of design work. Rogowski plans to secure a graphic design or marketing position in the Cleveland area.

Kiana Ziegler, from Ashland, OH, will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art, with a painting concentration, and a Bachelor of Art in Commercial Art, with a graphic design concentration. Ziegler is the youngest of Alma and Charles Ziegler of Ashland. She grew up in Ashland, graduating from Ashland High School in 2015. She entered her college career as an Honors Program Scholar, and shortly afterward, was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta, an honor society for academic excellence. She got the opportunity to create a mural for the Writing Center and a portrait for the theater production, Little Women in 2018. Off campus, Ziegler completed the illustrations decorating the entrance to Masterminds Escape Room and Game Library. She has completed several other private commissions as a freelance artist.
Active in her department, Ziegler served as the Vice President and President of Art Club. She was granted the opportunity to travel with the Art Department to museums in Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburg, and New York City. Ziegler was rewarded many art awards, such as the Bernini Art Award, People’s Choice Award, Design and Illustration Award, and Best in Show in the Juried Student Art Exhibition. She showed her artwork along with other projects at the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium. She was on the Dean’s List 7 semesters, and received several scholarships.
Upon graduation, Ziegler plans to attend Ohio University to receive a Masters in painting.
